Gachagua: I'll compare notes with Uhuru before making major decision

Rigathi Gachagua has revealed that no major political announcement will come from him until he first sits down with former President Uhuru Kenyatta, saying the former Head of State will help him weigh the views he is collecting from the public before he decides his next move.

The Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader made the remarks on Saturday, July 11, 2026, while hosting Murang'a Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) at his Wamunyoro residence. He said his ongoing 45-day public consultation is aimed at listening to residents, after which he will meet Kenyatta to discuss the feedback before taking any political step.

“Na nikimaliza hii mazungumzo yote mkinipatia maoni, kabla sijasema chochote, nitaenda nikae chini na Rais Uhuru Kenyatta so that we compare notes. Ndio pia Uhuru anishauri, si ndio?” Gachagua said.

The former Deputy President said he intends to brief Uhuru on what people across the Mt Kenya region have told him and hear the former President's views before making a final decision.

“Pia nataka Uhuru Kenyatta nimwambie vile watu wameniambia mlimani. Niende niseme ‘mkubwa wetu pia, nimeambiwa namna hii, unaona aje?’ kwa sababu ulikuwa umetuambia tukapotea,” he said.

According to Gachagua, the public engagement exercise is giving him a chance to hear directly from residents, but he also wants guidance from Uhuru because of his experience in leadership.

“So this time, mimi nimeskiza watu pia nataka pia wewe kama kiongozi unishauri. Si ndio?” he said.

Gachagua also sought to dispel suggestions that he and Kenyatta are no longer politically aligned, insisting they continue to work closely together.

“Na mimi na Rais Uhuru Kenyatta tunafanya kazi pamoja. Na mimi na ndugu yangu mkubwa Uhuru Kenyatta ni kama chanda na pete,” Gachagua said.

He argued that attacks directed at the former President are meant to weaken the relationship between them because their opponents fear a united Mt Kenya voting bloc.

“They are insulting Uhuru because they know that he and I are together. They know that when Uhuru and I are united, the mountain is held together,” he said.

Gachagua further accused unnamed political rivals of trying to sow discord within the opposition, saying there are deliberate efforts to pit opposition leaders against one another.

“They are trying to divide the United Opposition. They are trying to make us fight among ourselves,” he said.
