Thousands of teachers hoping to rise into school management have another opening after the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) announced 1,631 promotional positions across primary and secondary schools.
The fresh advertisement targets serving teachers who qualify for three leadership positions — Deputy Headteacher II, Deputy Principal III and Senior Master II — under the Career Progression Guidelines for Teachers.
The notice published through MyGov on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, gives eligible teachers until midnight on Monday, September 14, to submit their applications through the TSC recruitment portal.
Of the positions announced, 1,470 are for Deputy Headteacher II at Grade C4, T-Scale 9. The vacancies have been listed under Advert No. 110/2026, making them the largest share of the new promotion opportunities.
TSC has further listed 132 openings for Deputy Principal III under Advert No. 108/2026. The positions are graded D1 and fall under T-Scale 11.
Another 29 vacancies have been set aside for Senior Master II under Advert No. 109/2026. Like the Deputy Principal III positions, the Senior Master II posts are classified as Grade D1 and carry T-Scale 11.
The Commission has directed interested teachers to use its online recruitment system when applying. It said applications made through other means, including manual submissions, will not be considered.
Teachers who submitted applications for the same positions in the earlier advertisement and completed the process successfully have also been exempted from applying again.
Those selected for the posts should, however, expect possible transfers as part of their appointment. TSC said successful candidates will be deployed to schools and institutions with vacancies, meaning some may be assigned to stations away from their current workplaces.
The recruitment will be carried out under the Career Progression Guidelines for Teachers, according to the Commission.
TSC, which is established under Article 237(1) of the Constitution, also said it remains an equal opportunity employer and called on qualified persons with disabilities to apply for the available positions.
The latest vacancies come as the Commission continues with a wider teacher promotion programme announced earlier in the year.
In July 2026, TSC announced 34,016 competitive promotional positions in primary and secondary schools and teacher training colleges.
The exercise was made possible after funds were allocated to facilitate promotions and deal with career stagnation among teachers.
Applications for the larger exercise ended on August 10, with the Commission moving on to interviews for teachers who made the shortlist.
The new advertisement therefore offers another route for serving teachers looking to take on greater responsibilities within the education system.
Deputy Headteacher II is an administrative role in primary schools, where the office holder assists the headteacher with school management, staff supervision and the implementation of the curriculum.
In secondary schools, Deputy Principal III and Senior Master II are both placed at Grade D1 and T-Scale 11.
The 2025–2029 collective bargaining agreement places the basic salary for Grade C4 teachers at between about Sh57,667 and Sh72,988. Grade D1 teachers earn a basic salary ranging from about Sh80,500 to Sh97,827, excluding allowances and statutory deductions.
Teachers preparing their applications have been advised to first check the Career Progression Guidelines to confirm that they meet the requirements for the positions.
They have also been asked to update their details on the TSC online system and ensure their applications are completed before the September 14 deadline.
The Commission has not released station-by-station information for the vacancies in the latest notice. Applicants should therefore be ready to serve in institutions where the positions are available if selected.
