The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has opened the door for thousands of trained teachers seeking permanent employment, announcing 20,000 vacancies for junior schools as it steps up efforts to support the rollout of Competency Based Education (CBE) across the country.
The vacancies are for post-primary teachers who will be employed on permanent and pensionable terms to teach in junior schools. Interested candidates have until midnight on August 31, 2026, to submit their applications through the Commission's online recruitment portal.
In the recruitment notice, TSC said the hiring exercise is intended to boost staffing in junior schools and improve the delivery of the Competency Based Education curriculum.
"The Teachers Service Commission invites applications from qualified candidates to fill 20,000 Post Primary teachers posts in Junior Schools to support the implementation of Competency Based Education," the Commission said.
To qualify, applicants must be Kenyan citizens, possess at least a diploma in education, have attained a minimum KCSE mean grade of C+ and C+ in two teaching subjects or their equivalent, and be registered with the Teachers Service Commission.
The Commission advised candidates with equivalent qualifications to confirm their eligibility through its website before applying.
TSC said applications will only be accepted online, adding that manual submissions will not be considered. The recruitment exercise will be guided by the Commission's recruitment policy for the 2026/2027 financial year.
Applicants must also be unemployed and should not have exited the Commission's service on disciplinary grounds. Those shortlisted will be required to produce original academic and professional certificates during the verification process.
The Commission said appointments will be based strictly on merit and the number of available vacancies in each county. Successful applicants will teach various learning areas under the Junior School curriculum, while teacher interns who secure the positions will remain in their current sub-counties or stations.
"Selection of Candidates will strictly be on merit and based on the number of vacancies per County," the Commission stated.
TSC also encouraged persons living with disabilities to apply, saying it remains committed to equal employment opportunities in line with the Constitution.
At the same time, the Commission warned applicants against individuals demanding payment in exchange for employment opportunities.
"The recruitment exercise is free of charge," TSC said, urging anyone approached by fraudsters to report the matter to the nearest TSC office, the Commission's headquarters through the provided contacts, or the nearest police station.
More information, including vacancies available in every county and sub-county, has been published on the Commission's website.
