The Football Kenya Federation’s leadership crisis has deepened after a fourth attempted NEC meeting failed for lack of quorum, with the Mariga faction demanding action on governance, finances, judicial bodies and the football calendar.
In a statement on Monday, Mohammed said FKF was ready to begin the new season on September 19 after initial directions from the High Court in Murang’a on August 28, but the federation was served with two conflicting orders on the eve of the opening date.
In a letter dated July 17 and addressed to FKF Secretary General Dennis Gicheru, the club chairpersons accused the federation of failing to implement reforms jointly agreed upon nearly two months ago.
The dispute traces back to an April 24 NEC resolution that sought to compel the three officials to step aside over claims involving the alleged misappropriation of about Sh42 million connected to CHAN insurance funds and procurement-related concerns.
FKF President Hussein Mohammed expressed confidence in the country’s level of preparedness, telling lawmakers that planning is progressing in line with continental requirements.
In a statement, FKF said it had engaged with the anti-graft agency and reiterated its commitment to cooperate fully with the inquiry, emphasizing its adherence to transparency and accountability standards.
In a statement issued following a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on April 25, 2026, the FKF faction led by Mariga said it had taken decisive action after uncovering “serious governance, financial, and constitutional violations.”
Reports further indicate that the Sh42.4 million payment was processed on August 4, 2025, coinciding with the opening day of the tournament. The funds are said to have moved from FKF accounts through Ecobank before landing in an account linked to Fast Community Bank, raising fresh concerns about the flow of money and approval process behind the transaction.
Speaking at the Kenyan Ambassadors Conference on Monday, FKF President Hussein Mohammed said football has evolved into a powerful unifying force that goes beyond competition to shape societies and economies.
Following the defeat, Football Kenya Federation President Hussein Mohammed openly admitted the team’s performance was unacceptable.
He pressed that the work of growing the division was down to Kenyans only, stressing that the Kenyan Premier League (KPL), National Super League (NSL), Women’s Premier League, and upcoming youth leagues will only grow through deliberate efforts by Kenyans.
From the Sh1.12 billion deal, FKF will receive an annual average amount of Sh112 million, with a total of Sh85 million has been allocated for the 2025-26 season. In total, each club will collect Sh2.8 million for the 2025/26 season, a big boost for local clubs.
The federation said it is already working with relevant authorities to uncover the cause of the unrest.
