KPL club chairpersons warn FKF over league kickoff

Kenyan Premier League (KPL) club chairpersons have warned the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) that the 2026/27 top-flight league season cannot kick off on August 22 as scheduled unless a clear governance framework is put in place.

In a letter dated July 17 and addressed to FKF Secretary General Dennis Gicheru, the club chairpersons accused the federation of failing to implement reforms jointly agreed upon nearly two months ago.

"Has the Federation taken any steps to formulate applicable rules and regulations to formalise a Transition Committee?" the chairpersons asked, while also demanding to know what measures have been taken to establish an independent management structure for the country's top-flight league.

The chairpersons cited ongoing court cases and uncertainty over the league's regulatory framework, warning that launching another season without resolving the issues would create fresh confusion for clubs, players and supporters.

They also questioned FKF's commitment to establishing an autonomous Premier League, stating that the upcoming season "cannot and will not proceed under a cloud of confusion and without a clear leadership framework."

The concerns stem from resolutions reached during a meeting on May 26 between FKF President Hussein Mohammed and Premier League club chairpersons. Following that meeting, both parties announced a roadmap to establish a fully autonomous body to manage the Premier League beginning with the 2026/27 season.

In the letter, the chairpersons also questioned whether the resolutions were presented to the FKF National Executive Committee (NEC) during its July 11 meeting and sought clarification on the steps the federation has taken to operationalise the agreed transition.

The clubs further expressed concern over FKF's announcement that the new Premier League season will begin on August 22, arguing that the decision contradicts the spirit of the May agreement, which envisioned governance reforms before the start of the new campaign.

To seek clarification, the chairpersons have invited FKF's National Executive Committee, together with officials from the federation's Leagues and Competitions Department and the Leagues and Competitions Committee, to a meeting at Serena Hotel in Nairobi on July 21.
