HELB opens applications for 2026/2027 postgraduate partial scholarships, sets August 31 deadline

HELB has opened applications for its 2026/2027 postgraduate partial scholarship programme, offering eligible Kenyan students pursuing master's and PhD studies in accredited local universities an opportunity to receive funding of up to Sh450,000 as the board steps up support for advanced learning and research.

The scholarship programme targets students enrolled in both public and private universities recognised by the Commission for University Education (CUE), with preference given to those undertaking Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and agriculture-related courses.

In a public notice issued on Thursday, HELB said successful master's students will receive a partial scholarship of Sh200,000 spread over two years, while PhD students will be awarded Sh450,000, payable over three years.

The board said the programme is intended to support postgraduate learners pursuing strategic courses that contribute to research, innovation and Kenya's economic growth.

To qualify, applicants must meet a number of requirements before submitting their applications.

Among the key conditions is holding a Second-Class Upper Division degree. Applicants must also have an admission letter from a recognised university and be enrolled in a STEM or agriculture-related programme.

HELB further stated that applicants who previously benefited from its loan programme must show that they are actively repaying their loans or have fully settled them before they can be considered for the scholarship.

"If a past HELB loan beneficiary, the applicant MUST be REPAYING his/her loan or has CLEARED the Loan," the notice states.

The board also announced that every applicant will be required to pay a non-refundable application fee of Sh3,000 through the eCitizen platform.

"A non-refundable application fee of KShs.3,000 via E-CITIZEN applies," HELB said.

At the same time, HELB warned students to be on the lookout for fraudsters claiming they can assist with applications, speed up the process or guarantee successful scholarship awards in exchange for payment.

"Beware of fraudsters purporting to represent HELB and charging applicants to either apply on their behalf, fast track the application or guarantee the award of the scholarship. All processing is automated and is done by HELB," the board warned.

The board also encouraged persons living with disabilities to submit their applications, saying the scholarship programme is open to all eligible candidates who meet the set requirements.

"Persons with Special needs are encouraged to apply," the notice added.

Applications are being received online through the Higher Education Financing portal, where eligible students are expected to register, complete the 2026/2027 postgraduate scholarship application and submit it electronically before the August 31, 2026 deadline.
