KMTC students taking Certificate and Diploma courses have been given a new route to finance their studies after HELB opened applications for the 2026/2027 academic year.
The application window, which started on Friday, August 21, will remain open until September 30, 2026. Eligible students have been advised to complete the process early instead of waiting until the closing date.
The Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) announced the development on Tuesday, August 25, saying students who meet the requirements should take advantage of the opportunity.
"When you ask us, we listen. You asked us for a HELB loan. Now, we have some good news for you," KMTC said.
The college said the financing is available to learners enrolled in Certificate and Diploma programmes.
"The HELB 2026/2027 KMTC Loan Application is now open for students pursuing Certificate and Diploma courses. Application window: August 21- September 30 2026," it added.
Students applying for the loans are expected to complete the process online through the Higher Education Financing Portal.
Applicants first need to register on the portal and provide the required personal details. They should then select the KMTC loan option and proceed with the application by following the instructions provided.
Before submitting the form, students have been advised to go through the information they have entered and correct any errors.
After completing the submission, applicants will receive an application number through either SMS or email to confirm that their application has been received.
The opening of the application period follows an earlier announcement by KMTC that its students would be brought into the higher education loan programme following a commitment by President William Ruto.
KMTC students have for years depended largely on a revolving fund to help finance their training, while university students have had access to loans and scholarships through HELB.
The latest arrangement gives KMTC learners an opportunity to access the same structured government financing system that has been available to students in universities and other tertiary institutions.
The inclusion of the medical college students is expected to help address the funding challenges faced by learners who have struggled to meet the cost of their studies because of limited government financing options.
Students who qualify now have until September 30 to submit their applications, with KMTC encouraging them to complete the process early and avoid a rush as the deadline approaches.
