World Cup semis: England, Argentina renew rivalry for 5th meeting

England edged past Norway 2-1 after extra time in Miami on Saturday, while defending champions Argentina defeated Switzerland 3-1 after extra time in Kansas to book a blockbuster World Cup semi-final on Wednesday in Atlanta. It will be the fifth World Cup meeting between the two football giants.

Jude Bellingham scored England's equaliser in the 47th minute after Norway had taken the lead through Schjelderup in the 36th minute. Bellingham then struck again in the 93rd minute of extra time to seal victory for the Three Lions, ending the tournament of one of the World Cup's top scorers, Erling Haaland, who finishes with seven goals.

In Kansas, Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister gave Argentina the lead in the 10th minute before Nottingham Forest's Dan Ndoye equalised for Switzerland in the 67th minute.

The match took another twist in the 72nd minute when Swiss striker Breel Embolo was shown a second yellow card for simulation following a VAR review after an earlier altercation with Leandro Paredes, reducing Switzerland to 10 men.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, Switzerland held on until the closing stages of extra time, when Julián Álvarez scored in the 112th minute before Lautaro Martínez added a third in the 120th minute to secure Argentina's 3-1 victory.

Wednesday's semi-final in Atlanta will mark the fifth World Cup meeting between England and Argentina.

Their rivalry began at the 1962 World Cup in Chile, where England won 3-1. Four years later, England beat Argentina 1-0 in the quarter-finals on home soil before going on to lift their only World Cup title.

Argentina gained revenge at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico, defeating England 2-1 in the quarter-finals in a match remembered for Diego Maradona's infamous "Hand of God" goal and his brilliant solo effort, as Argentina went on to win the tournament.

The teams met again in the 1998 World Cup Round of 16 in France. The match ended 2-2 after extra time before Argentina progressed 4-3 on penalties. England were reduced to 10 men after David Beckham was sent off for kicking Diego Simeone, while Sol Campbell had a goal controversially disallowed.

Their most recent World Cup meeting came in the 2002 tournament in Japan and South Korea, where England won 1-0 in the group stage. Now, 24 years later, they renew one of football's fiercest rivalries on American soil.

England captain Harry Kane, who has scored five goals at the tournament, failed to find the net against Norway. Argentina captain Lionel Messi, the tournament's leading scorer with eight goals, was also kept off the scoresheet against Switzerland.

With a place in the World Cup final at stake, all eyes will be on Atlanta as Kane and Messi look to lead their nations in another historic chapter of one of football's greatest rivalries.
