Wanyonyi misses podium in London 800m race

Just days after his historic 1000m world record in Monaco, reigning 800m world champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi endured a disappointing outing at the London Diamond League on Saturday, finishing fourth in a highly competitive men's 800m race.

Competing at the ninth leg of the 2026 Diamond League, the Novuna Athletics Meeting at the London Stadium, the Kenyan crossed the finish line in 1:43.30, extending his wait for a first Diamond League victory over the two-lap distance this season.

American Brandon Miller produced a sensational performance to win the race in a personal best 1:42.19, ahead of Ireland's Mark English, who also clocked a personal best of 1:42.97. Britain's Max Burgin delighted the home crowd by finishing third in 1:43.30.

Despite missing out on the podium, Wanyonyi has enjoyed an impressive start to the 2026 season, demonstrating his versatility and consistency across multiple middle-distance events.

He opened his campaign by winning the men's 1500m at the Kip Keino Classic in 3:34.11 before switching to the Diamond League circuit, where he finished second in Rabat in 1:43.56 and followed it up with another runner-up finish in Oslo in 1:42.09.

At the Diamond League meeting in Monaco, Wanyonyi stormed to victory in the men's 1000m, shattering the world record with a sensational 2:11.83, further cementing his status as one of the world's leading middle-distance runners.
