UDA scraps registration fees ahead of October 3 ward grassroots polls

Candidates eyeing ward-level positions in the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) will not pay registration fees as the party begins its second phase of grassroots elections ahead of polls scheduled for October 3, 2026.

The party has opened registration for officials seeking to contest in the Phase II Ward-Level Grassroots Elections, with the process set to run until September 27.

UDA’s National Elections Board (NEB) said the elections will be held from 8am to 5pm across 13 counties, marking the next stage in the party’s efforts to put in place and strengthen its grassroots structures.

The counties covered by the exercise are Wajir, Marsabit, Isiolo, Kisii, Samburu, Nandi, Vihiga, Baringo, Nakuru, Mombasa, Embu, Meru and Tharaka Nithi.

In an amended notice issued on September 12, 2026, NEB chairman Anthony Mwaura formally communicated the new election date and revised registration terms.

“The National Elections Board hereby notifies all Grassroots Polling Centre Officials intending to contest for Ward-Level Positions and informs all Party Members, Leaders and Stakeholders that Phase II Ward Grassroots Elections shall be conducted on Saturday, 3rd October 2026, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.,” Mwaura said.

The board also changed an earlier position that required aspirants to pay a registration fee before being cleared to contest.

Mwaura said the waiver covers all Grassroots Polling Centre Officials who intend to participate in the Phase II ward-level elections.

“The National Elections Board hereby notifies all concerned parties that the registration fee for the Phase II Ward-Level Grassroots Elections has been waived,” he said.

Registration opened on Saturday, September 12, and candidates have until 5pm on Sunday, September 27, to submit their applications.

The exercise will be followed by a verification process on Monday, September 28, giving the party a few days to prepare for the October 3 polls.

UDA has directed candidates to use its Ward Candidate Registration Portal to register for the ward-level positions.

Mwaura called on polling centre officials planning to contest to follow the announced schedule and complete the registration process within the set period.

The decision to drop the registration charge means eligible officials can enter the ward-level contest without meeting the earlier financial requirement.

The October elections are part of a broader UDA grassroots exercise targeting the party’s structures at ward level.

Through the Phase II polls, the party will conduct elections in the 13 listed counties while following the timetable set by the NEB for registration, verification and voting.

Party members, leaders and other stakeholders in the affected counties have also been asked to take note of the amended schedule and prepare for the elections.

The revised notice was signed by Mwaura as chairman of the UDA National Elections Board under reference UDA/3/NEB/GWL/26.
