Two Nyamache District officials have been released on a cash bail of Sh20,000 each after being arrested by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) over allegations of soliciting and receiving a bribe linked to the processing of a government cheque belonging to the Etago Sub-County Children's Office in Kisii County.
The anti-graft agency said the two public officers were released after being processed and will remain on bail pending the completion of investigations into claims that they demanded and received money in exchange for facilitating the processing of the government cheque.
The suspects were identified as Annrose Gakenia, the Nyamache District Accountant, and her deputy, Josphat Ongori Motari.
According to EACC, the arrests followed a complaint received by its South Nyanza Regional Office from the Children's Officer for Etago Sub-County in Kisii County.
The complainant alleged that the District Accountant had demanded a bribe before signing a cheque worth Sh46,000 belonging to the Etago Sub-County Children's Office.
"The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested the Nyamache District Accountant, Ms. Annrose Gakenia, and her deputy, Mr. Josphat Ongori Motari, over allegations of soliciting and receiving a bribe," the Commission stated.
EACC said the complaint prompted investigators to launch an operation targeting the alleged bribery scheme.
According to the Commission, the Children's Officer reported that payment could not be processed unless money was paid to facilitate the signing of the cheque.
"The complainant alleged that the District Accountant solicited a bribe in exchange for signing a cheque for Sh46,000 belonging to the Etago Sub-County Children's Office," the statement added.
The Commission highlighted that investigators mounted an operation that resulted in the arrest of the District Accountant while she was allegedly receiving part of the money demanded.
"Following an operation mounted by the Commission, Ms. Gakenia was arrested while allegedly receiving Sh8,000 from the complainant. Mr. Motari was also arrested in connection with the alleged bribery scheme."
The agency illustrated that both suspects were taken through the necessary processing procedures before being released on bail as investigators continue gathering evidence.
No charges have yet been announced, with EACC indicating that investigations remain ongoing.
The latest arrests reflect its continued efforts to tackle bribery and corruption within public institutions and ensure accountability in the delivery of government services.
It also appealed to members of the public to continue reporting suspected corruption through its official reporting channels.
"EACC reiterates its commitment to combating bribery and other forms of corruption and encourages members of the public to report corrupt practices through the Commission's reporting channels."
The investigation is expected to establish the full circumstances surrounding the alleged bribery scheme before EACC determines the appropriate legal action against the two public officers.
