England manager Thomas Tuchel is sweating over the fitness of midfielder Declan Rice and will make a late decision on whether the Arsenal star is fit to start Tuesday's World Cup semi-final against Argentina in Atlanta.
There is optimism that Rice will recover in time after battling an illness that affected his preparations for Saturday's quarter-final victory over Norway in Miami. The midfielder was substituted at half-time after struggling with a stomach bug.
Tuchel revealed after England's 2-1 extra-time win that Rice had spent three days in bed before the match due to illness.
Rice is understood to have contracted the bug while England were in Mexico, where they defeated the co-hosts 3-2 in the Round of 16. Although he has not fully recovered, his condition has improved significantly over the past 48 hours.
England's medical team will make a late assessment of the midfielder's fitness before Tuchel decides whether to include him in the starting line-up against Lionel Messi's Argentina.
In addition to the illness, Rice has also been managing a long-standing neural issue affecting his lower back and hamstring.
The 78-cap England international has started all but one of England's matches at the World Cup, missing only the 2-0 group-stage win over Panama because of an injury flare-up.
