Three arrested as police recover cannabis worth Sh23 million in Busia

Police have arrested three suspects after recovering 780.95 kilograms of cannabis sativa worth an estimated Sh23.4 millions from a house in Mabale area, Busia Township.

According to a statement by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations on August 8, 2026, the suspects, Patrick Wandera Khasali, Simon Ogola Khasali and Dorine Glara Adongo, were arrested during an intelligence-led operation following a tip-off from members of the public.

Officers found 15 gunny bags containing the suspected cannabis during a search of the house.

The three remain in police custody as detectives from the Anti-Narcotics Unit in Busia investigate the source and intended destination of the consignment.

This comes days after DCI detectives arrested three suspected drug traffickers in separate intelligence-led operations across Homa Bay, Nairobi and Mombasa as it intensifies a nationwide crackdown on narcotics trafficking.

Detectives from the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) recovered suspected cannabis linked to the suspects, including a haul worth an estimated Sh2.76 million in Homa Bay and another consignment concealed inside a sack declared to contain dried cassava in Mombasa.

Taking to its X account on Friday, the agency said the operations form part of a broader effort to dismantle drug trafficking networks operating across the country.

In Homa Bay County, detectives from the DCI Anti-Narcotics Unit, working jointly with officers from Oyugis Police Station, arrested Carren Adhiambo Akoth, who had been on the run after detectives recovered 91.94 kilograms of cannabis worth approximately Sh2.76 million from her residence in Oyugis on June 14.

According to investigators, the suspect disappeared immediately after the drugs were seized, prompting detectives to launch an extensive search that culminated in her arrest after weeks of investigations and intelligence gathering.

"In Homa Bay County, a joint team of detectives from DCI ANU Homa Bay and officers from Oyugis Police Station arrested Carren Adhiambo Akoth, who had been on the run after detectives recovered 91.94 kilograms of cannabis worth approximately Sh2.76 million from her residence in Oyugis on June 14, 2026. The suspect vanished after the seizure, but detectives kept the trail alive. Through sustained investigations and actionable intelligence, they trailed her down to her hideout, where she was arrested. She is expected to be arraigned in court to face charges related to narcotics trafficking," DCI said.
