The opposition politician has remained behind bars since November 2024 after he and his aide, Obeid Lutale, were arrested in neighbouring Kenya before being taken back to Uganda, where both were later charged with treason.
In a statement shared on X on Saturday, Museveni said Gen Ali died at Nakasero Hospital at 4 p.m., describing him as a dedicated soldier, political leader and accomplished farmer whose service to Uganda spanned several decades.
According to the Deputy President, Kenya is keen on expanding collaboration with Uganda in areas such as trade, infrastructure development, education, healthcare and regional security to boost economic growth and improve livelihoods.

Addressing the gathering, Junet dismissed claims that the railway was a “rail to nowhere,” arguing that such views were based on a lack of understanding of the project’s broader plan. He maintained that the railway has always been intended to grow into a key link connecting Kenya to the wider region.
The planned line will stretch 369 kilometres from Naivasha, passing through Narok and Kisumu before terminating at Malaba on the Kenya-Uganda border. With a projected cost of Sh500 billion, the project is expected to play a central role in linking inland regions to the Port of Mombasa while strengthening trade routes across East Africa.
The society rejected the militarization of civilian spaces and warned against the use of national security as a justification for violence against unarmed civilians.
The allegations come amid heightened political tensions in Uganda, where opposition figures have repeatedly accused security agencies of arbitrary arrests, abductions and intimidation, particularly during periods of increased political mobilisation.
The Ugandan Electoral Commission on Saturday announced Museveni President-elect for a seventh consecutive term. This makes him the longest serving Ugandan president and one of the oldest heads of state alive.
According to the Electoral Commission, the 80-year-old president maintained a strong advantage throughout the vote count, reinforcing his grip on power since first taking office in 1986.
The timeline for announcing results is guided by Uganda’s 1995 constitution. Article 103(7) states that the Electoral Commission must determine, publish, and declare the presidential election results in writing under its seal within 48 hours of polling.
Voting will take place on Thursday, 15 January 2026, opening at 07:00 local time (04:00 GMT) and closing at 16:00. Anyone still in line at closing will be allowed to vote.
