Speaking at a rally in Busia on Sunday, Siaya Governor James Orengo said the party’s focus is on protecting citizens’ rights rather than chasing positions in government.
The President noted that the large turnout reflects both the party’s reach across the country and the strong competition anticipated during the primaries.
Figures released by Kindiki show the growing interest in elective positions within the party. He noted that 149 aspirants are seeking 47 gubernatorial seats, 279 are eyeing the 47 elected senator positions, 323 are contesting for 47 woman representative posts, 1,372 are vying for the 290 National Assembly constituencies, and 10,230 hopefuls are competing for the 1,450 ward representative seats.
Figures released by the party show that 139 aspirants are aiming for the 47 governor seats, while 240 hopefuls have expressed interest in the 47 Senate positions. A further 274 party members are seeking nomination for the Women Representative seats across the counties.
Mudavadi also addressed a recent court decision that questioned the legality of ANC’s merger with UDA. He brushed off the ruling, saying it had no practical effect on the political direction already taken by his supporters.
Alongside promoting youth engagement and women’s leadership, the UDA leaders voiced confidence in President William Ruto’s chances of winning a second term in 2027, citing visible development projects under the Kenya Kwanza administration as proof of progress.
The registration drive comes amid heightened political activity as parties begin laying the groundwork for 2027, with early organisation seen as key to managing competitive nominations and ensuring orderly internal elections.
The President said the proposed UDA-ODM coalition was part of a deliberate effort to broaden political consensus and consolidate national unity, while also strengthening the party’s electoral prospects in 2027.
Mudavadi said applications submitted through the party’s portal show growing interest across all levels. He said 640 Kenyans have so far expressed interest in Member of Parliament positions, 64 in governor seats, 98 for Senate, 138 for Woman Representative and 2,863 for Member of County Assembly positions.
The meeting brings together all UDA elected leaders, including governors, senators, members of Parliament, women representatives, and nominated leaders, at the State House in Nairobi.
The statement, signed by Lamu County Governor and UDA 2nd Deputy Party Leader Issa Timamy, said the court decision touching on the alleged merger was no longer relevant.
The NGC will deliberate on key political and governance matters when it meets next week, including the implementation of the government’s manifesto, party elections, and ongoing political engagements.
