KUPPET Kericho Executive Secretary Mary Rotich urged the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to immediately transfer all staff from Litein High, pointing out that the teachers had been wrongly held responsible for the unrest that followed fines imposed on parents to repair damage from the September 21 demonstrations.
The 2025 exams will see a record 3,424,836 candidates sit for KCSE, KPSEA, and KJSEA. This massive exercise will be supported by 10,765 centre managers, 12,126 supervisors, 54,782 invigilators, and 22,247 security officers for KCSE alone. Primary and junior exams require even more staff, including over 125,000 invigilators.
Ogamba noted that despite the government hiring 76,000 teachers in recent years and planning to employ another 24,000 by December 2025, the problem of staffing schools in remote and insecure areas continues.
Hardship allowances are meant to support public servants posted to regions with insecurity, poor infrastructure, or lack of basic services.
The new arrangement, if implemented, will place comprehensive schools under the leadership of a principal supported by two deputies—one responsible for the primary section and the other for the junior school.
Since the 2022/2023 financial year, the state has employed over 56,000 teachers on permanent and pensionable terms and 20,000 on internship.
All teachers nominated to serve must be registered in the CP2 system by September 26, 2025, and must be employed and registered with TSC. Teachers will not be allowed to serve in schools where they have worked in the past three years.
This latest standoff follows KNUT’s warning to the new TSC leadership against political interference in teachers’ employment and promotions.
According to the TSC recruitment score sheet, science teachers are awarded 65 marks, making them far more likely to secure employment than their counterparts.
KUPPET officials led by chairman Omboko Milemba said many schools are struggling to stay afloat financially just as students prepare for national examinations.
A TSC survey conducted between March and July 2022 indicated that an average of 44 teachers retire, die, or resign each day.
