Controller of Budget Margaret Nyakang’o disclosed the planned payment in her monitoring and evaluation report on budget implementation for Sports Kenya, indicating that the funds will push total payments made to China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) to Sh28.97 billion since construction began on March 1, 2024.
Speaking during an inspection visit to the Talanta Sports City construction site on Tuesday, Kindiki praised workers building the stadium, saying they were leaving behind a lasting national legacy while helping modernise Kenya's sports infrastructure.
Pitch development at the main stadium is ongoing, with grass already planted and expected to fully mature within the next three months before testing and final stitching works are carried out.
The 60,000-seat stadium is set to host football and rugby, complemented by major infrastructure including a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor along Ngong Road, a railway station for spectators, and a connecting route from the Southern Bypass to the Bomas International Conference Centre.
The National Assembly’s Committee on Sports and Culture flagged the financing plan, intended to support one of the main venues for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, for lacking transparency and sufficient public consultation.
