Scheduled system upgrades allow operators to patch vulnerabilities, improve processing speed, and implement backend improvements that support future enhancements and better scalability. Safaricom emphasised that customers’ understanding is valued as the upgrade is carried out.
Introduced in 2019, Fuliza allows M-Pesa customers to complete transactions even when their wallet balance is insufficient, as long as they stay within a credit limit set based on their transaction history. The service operates in partnership with NCBA and KCB Bank, who underwrite the loans, ensuring that users can cover shortfalls when sending money, withdrawing cash at M-Pesa agents, paying bills, or buying airtime.

The temporary closures are scheduled for Thursday, October 9, and will cover key towns and cities, including Nairobi, Mombasa, Malindi, Diani, Machakos, Kitui, Thika, Nyeri, Nanyuki, Embu, Maua, Meru, and Garissa.
In a notice released to customers on September 19, 2025, Safaricom said the system upgrade is scheduled for Monday, 22 September 2025, from 12:30 am to 3:30 am.
According to Safaricom senior manager Zachary Kirogoi Mburu, a number registered in Murangiri’s name was active on June 20 at 11:20 am at St. Ellis House and later between 3:56 p.m. and 6:21 p.m. at the same location.
