The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) says it has taken 90 cases involving forged academic certificates to court. Forty-three of those cases have ended in convictions, while 39 are still pending in courts across the country.
As mandated by law, the commission handles the recruitment, registration, employment, assignment, promotion, transfer, discipline and termination of teachers in public learning institutions. In July, it introduced automatic promotions aimed at speeding up career growth for deserving tutors based on performance, while retaining competitive promotions for those rising to higher ranks.
The union drew comparisons with recent changes in the National Police Service (NPS), where officers who had been in the same rank for more than a decade were promoted without interviews or advertised vacancies.
The directive also covers corporals and sergeants who have held the same rank for over 15 years, as well as inspectors who have served for more than a decade without advancement.
KESSHA National Secretary Abdi Noor Haji revealed that 1,864 principals, senior principals, and chief principals had their promotions withdrawn despite having successfully gone through interviews.
