In an update on Monday, the association says addressing these challenges through targeted policy reforms will help unlock Kenya's manufacturing potential, attract investment and spur job creation.
President William Ruto says Kenya and Tanzania have identified non-tariff barriers affecting cross-border commerce and directed officials to remove them, aiming for completion by June 30, 2026. The move targets deeper EAC integration and reduced trade losses.
Investment links between the two countries have also grown. Kenyan investments in Tanzania now stand at more than Sh219.3 billion, while Tanzanian investments in Kenya have reached over Sh43.3 billion.
Key among the changes is a reduction in police checkpoints, which will be brought down from more than 20 to fewer than five. Authorities are also working to cut the transit time between Mombasa and Malaba by half, while improving response to security threats along the highway. Persistent ICT failures that disrupt cargo clearance are also set to be addressed as part of the overhaul.
