Speaking on Monday after the second sitting of the Joint Implementation Committee on the Cooperation Agreement between the National Government and Nairobi City County Government, Sakaja expressed solidarity with affected families, assuring them of the county support.
The utility says supply has resumed in Buruburu, Dandora, Kariobangi and parts of Mathare, while repair teams continue working on distribution lines in Kiambiu and Korogocho to fully stabilise services.
According to the Ministry of Interior, the mapping exercise, conducted under the Nairobi Rivers Regeneration Programme, highlights areas at risk along major rivers, including the Nairobi, Mathare, and Ngong rivers.
Adolwa explained that excessive rainfall, worsened by climate change, interacts with densely populated areas in fragile ecosystems, creating devastating effects. He noted that Nairobi’s population has jumped from 4,397,073 in the 2019 census to over 4.8 million today, placing enormous pressure on infrastructure, natural drainage systems, and urban management practices.
Speaking during an interview on Citizen TV on Sunday, Sakaja said the county cannot tackle the problem alone and urged Nairobians to support ongoing efforts to improve drainage and environmental management.
The Nairobi Rivers Commission said the latest flooding incidents have exposed the vulnerability of the capital’s urban environment and highlighted the urgent need to restore and protect river corridors and drainage systems.
The impact of the wet weather is already being felt in several counties, including Nairobi, Kiambu, Kajiado, Machakos, and parts of Western Kenya, the Rift Valley Highlands, and the Coastal region
The president said the disaster has already brought serious hardship to many communities, including loss of lives, displacement of households, and damage to homes, businesses, and livelihoods.
