In a clear commitment, the county pledged to reclassify 20 doctors from Job Group M to Job Group Q, with the new letters scheduled for release by December 17, 2025. This change comes as part of a broader plan to motivate staff and ensure that qualified professionals are properly recognized within the county’s health system.
KMPDU Secretary General Dr. Davji Atellah said the county had acted in total contravention of the Constitution, the Public Service Commission Human Resource Policy, and the Labour Relations Act by ignoring legitimate concerns raised by medical staff.
The breakthrough came after the Council of Governors intervened to mediate between the county authorities and the union, guiding both parties to a resolution acceptable to all sides.
KMPDU Secretary General Davji Atellah noted that while the national government has implemented many reforms, counties continue to lag behind.
The union has documented 136 cases across two Level Five hospitals ( Kiambu and Thika), complete with patient details, medical records, and contacts.
Acting Chief Executive Officer Richard Lesiyampe said the hospital is under immense pressure, with staff attending to a growing number of patients, many in serious condition.
In a statement, KMPDU Secretary General Dr. Davji Bhimji Atellah said the move is to allow broader participation, effective coordination, and meaningful engagement with all relevant stakeholders.
The union’s response came after Council of Governors Chair and Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi on Monday dismissed reports of neonatal deaths in Kiambu as “misleading” and based on unverified information. Abdullahi insisted that medical facilities in the county were running normally, claiming that some individuals were using the reports to attack devolution and undermine county health systems.
In a statement on Monday, the Council said it had noted with great concern the false publication by the doctors’ union regarding the state of healthcare services in the county.
The move follows a four-month-long doctors’ strike in Kiambu, with the union stressing that the sanctity of medical internships must not be compromised by prolonged county disputes.
The push for updated remuneration follows the government’s move to clear doctors’ salary arrears going back to 2017 under the Collective Bargaining Agreement signed eight years ago.
KMPDU Secretary General Davji Bhimji Atellah explained that in 2018, the ministry had cleared arrears for 420 government-sponsored registrars following talks with the union.
