The Teachers Service Commission (Amendment) Bill, 2026, sponsored by National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, seeks to introduce a range of new disciplinary offences for teachers employed by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).
The “sponyo” name, drawn from the word “sponsor”, has been used by President William Ruto and his allies in reference to allegations that Uhuru is financing or supporting opposition political activities.
The Majority Leader said political parties and leaders should also change how they engage with voters, arguing that elections should provide an opportunity for Kenyans to compare different plans rather than witness clashes between supporters.
Ichung’wah used the issue of electricity to drive home his message, pointing to transformers and other power infrastructure as some of the services residents would expect their MP to help secure.
The Kikuyu MP said his position was also informed by his belief in the broad-based government, which he considers the right platform to steer the country forward.
The Majority Leader also recalled former President Mwai Kibaki’s remarks in 2008 on the need for Kenya to think about population growth and how the country would prepare for it.
Ichung’wah also defended the Affordable Housing Programme, saying it was benefiting those who qualify for the houses while creating opportunities for workers involved in construction.
Responding in a statement, Ichung'wah said Gachagua had turned to what he described as propaganda after realising that his preferred candidate was facing defeat in the contest.
The proposed Strategic Goods Control Bill, 2026, provides for the creation of a central control committee that will oversee licensing, maintain a national control list, and regulate the import, export, storage, and transit of strategic goods. The committee will also have the authority to issue, suspend, or revoke licences and conduct compliance inspections to ensure proper use of approved items.
