Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba told the Senate that the government was working with the National Treasury and other stakeholders to raise the money required to employ the remaining teachers permanently.
Speaking in Dallas on Friday, September 26, 2026, Gachagua said the political changes being sought by the United Opposition would not solve the country’s problems unless they were followed by clear action to create jobs.
The senator questioned how the commission decides which teachers can take part in the promotion process, particularly those who are currently deployed to junior secondary schools.
The proposal has received backing from the Kenya Association of Junior School Teachers, the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), and over 50,000 educators who advocate for the recognition of Junior Secondary Schools as a distinct education level.
