Senators described the office as the weakest link in Kenya’s anti-corruption fight, pointing to instances where the DPP’s decisions to withdraw cases have frustrated investigations and denied the public the full course of justice.
The commission said its probe is examining accusations that Sh700 million was paid in salaries to ghost workers. The inquiry also focuses on conflict of interest in the awarding of contracts worth Sh265 million to Takaful Insurance of Africa Ltd and Tina Gardens Hotel, companies alleged to be linked to the Governor.
Obado is facing trial alongside his four children and 11 other individuals. They are accused of embezzling public funds while he was governor of Migori County.
EACC said its investigations point to irregular procurement, conflict of interest, and questionable payments to companies linked to the former governor’s associates.
The summonses form part of EACC’s intensified anti-graft campaign aimed at holding both current and former officials accountable for alleged misappropriation of public funds.
To facilitate the investigations, EACC has directed the Assembly to provide original documents, including the procurement plan and budget for 2023/2024, conflict-of-interest registers, tender records, evaluation reports, payment vouchers, IFMIS statements, and bank details of the winning bidder.
EACC Chief Executive Officer Abdi Mohamud said the probes touch on embezzlement of public funds, money laundering, conflict of interest, and possession of unexplained wealth.
He has been directed to appear at the EACC’s Integrity Centre offices in Nairobi on August 25, 2025, at 10 am, for an interview and to record a statement.
The announcement came during a courtesy call by an SIU delegation at the EACC’s Integrity Centre headquarters, where both agencies pledged to advance their partnership
