The department said Nairobi and several Central Kenya counties will experience intermittent cool and cloudy conditions with occasional light rainfall, drizzle and fog as the June-July-August cold season gradually comes to an end.
According to the forecast, central and western parts of Kenya are likely to receive rainfall levels higher than usual, with moderate amounts ranging between 50 and 200 millimetres expected in multiple counties.
The warning came during the opening of the 72nd Greater Horn of Africa Climate Outlook Forum (GHACOF 72), hosted by the IGAD Climate Prediction and Applications Centre (ICPAC) in Nairobi on Monday.
The two-week conference is expected to focus on climate financing and supporting vulnerable nations already facing the harshest effects of global warming. The urgency of the talks has been amplified by a string of extreme weather events, including Hurricane Melissa, which devastated parts of the Caribbean and killed more than 75 people.
The warning follows forecasts from the IGAD Climate Prediction and Applications Centre (ICPAC), which projects a high chance of below-normal rainfall for October–December 2025 in eastern Kenya, southern Ethiopia, parts of Somalia, and northern Tanzania. ICPAC notes that this period is a key rainfall season, accounting for up to 70 percent of annual precipitation in some parts of the Horn of Africa.
