KNEC has directed that individual candidates will not receive the certificates directly. Instead, the documents will be distributed through the respective colleges, which are required to coordinate with the council to facilitate collection.
In a statement issued on Thursday, December 18, KNEC said the certificates were sent to all schools nationwide using Sub-County Directors of Education as the main distribution channel. Candidates were advised to contact the schools where they sat their examinations to obtain the certificates.
In a notice signed by the Director-General, KSG stated that certificates numbered MA 0251 to MA 1000 “do not originate from the school and cannot be recognised as evidence of any qualification.”
The new documents will not display traditional grades such as A, B, C, or D, nor the actual marks scored. This information will only be shared with the Ministry of Education for placement purposes into senior school. Certification will now only be awarded at the completion of basic education — at the end of Grade 12.
Police clearance certificates, also called Certificates of Good Conduct, are essential for employment, immigration, or professional licensing.
Public Service CS Ruku explained that the intention is to have a central system where fingerprints and personal data are securely stored, reducing repetitive procedures for citizens.
