Gregor Kobel emerged as Switzerland's hero after producing a superb save in the penalty shootout to secure a place in the World Cup quarter-finals with a 4-3 shootout victory over Colombia following a goalless draw at BC Place in Vancouver.
The Swiss goalkeeper denied Colombia's Cucho Hernández after centre-backs from both sides had earlier missed their penalties.
Colombia defender Davinson Sánchez struck the underside of the crossbar with his effort, while former Manchester City defender Manuel Akanji blasted Switzerland's penalty over the bar to keep the shootout level.
Kobel then made a decisive save from Hernández before Cedric Itten and Ruben Vargas converted their penalties, adding to successful spot kicks from Granit Xhaka and Zeki Amdouni to seal Switzerland's victory.
Murat Yakin's side have reached the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time since 1954 and will now face reigning champions Argentina at Kansas City Stadium on Sunday, 12 July.
The match itself produced few clear-cut opportunities, with both teams struggling to create meaningful chances during the 90 minutes.
Jhon Lucumí came closest for Colombia when his header from a corner struck the crossbar, while substitute Jaminton Campaz forced an awkward save from Kobel with a long-range effort early in extra time.
Colombia had the best chance to win the match late in extra time after a defensive mistake by Xhaka, but Campaz curled his effort over the bar.
It proved to be a costly miss as Colombia once again suffered penalty shootout heartbreak, having also been eliminated on penalties by England at the same stage in 2018.
The South Americans bowed out after conceding just one goal throughout the tournament. They had topped their group ahead of Portugal before defeating Ghana in the Round of 32.
Despite strong support from Colombian fans inside the stadium, Luis Díaz and James Rodríguez, who made his 131st appearance to become Colombia's all-time appearance leader—were unable to inspire a breakthrough. Campaz and Juan Quintero added energy from the bench, but Colombia finished the tournament with just five goals from 94 shots.
Switzerland, meanwhile, have now won two knockout matches at a single World Cup for the first time, having already defeated Algeria in the Round of 32. They will now look to halt Lionel Messi and Argentina's bid for back-to-back World Cup titles.
The Swiss progressed despite missing one of the tournament's breakout stars, Johan Manzambi, who was sidelined through injury. His pace and creativity—having contributed three goals and two assists—were noticeably absent.
Vargas, who had scored twice earlier in the tournament, was only fit enough for a place on the bench but came on late to convert the winning penalty. Switzerland will hope both he and Manzambi are fit for Sunday's quarter-final against Argentina.
