Sifuna backs Linda Mwananchi’s Homa Bay tour amid security warnings

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has expressed confidence in the growing momentum behind the Linda Mwananchi movement ahead of its planned tour of Homa Bay County on Sunday, August 16, 2026.

Sifuna took to social media late Saturday to commend the movement’s advance teams for working late to finalise preparations for the Homa Bay engagements, as anticipation around the political mobilisation continued to build.

“You guys know how hard our advance teams work. They make everything possible. Ndio wanafunga kazi saa hii Omabei. Makofi?” Sifuna posted on his X account.

In another post shortly afterwards, the Nairobi senator wrote: “Nikama hatutalala.” The remarks came as supporters were seen engaging in political chants in Homa Bay at night ahead of Sunday’s planned tour.

The Homa Bay visit is the latest stop in the Linda Mwananchi movement’s nationwide civic and political engagement campaign, which has taken Sifuna and other opposition figures to different parts of the country.

The movement announced the Homa Bay tour earlier this month, with organisers notifying police of their planned August 16 gathering. The notification was submitted to the Homa Bay county police commander as part of preparations for the event.

The tour comes as political mobilisation gathers pace ahead of the 2027 General Election, with Linda Mwananchi seeking to expand its presence beyond areas where its leaders have previously attracted large crowds.

Homa Bay is particularly significant because of its long-standing association with opposition politics and the political influence of established formations in the region. The visit is therefore expected to provide Sifuna and his allies with an opportunity to demonstrate whether the movement can attract support in areas with strong existing political networks.

The planned engagements have also been accompanied by heightened security concerns. Linda Mwananchi leaders have alleged that attempts could be made to disrupt their activities and prevent supporters from accessing Homa Bay. The movement has consequently called for adequate security during the tour.

Homa Bay County Commissioner Ronald Mwiwawi has warned political actors against organising civilian groups to provide security, saying such arrangements could heighten tensions. He maintained that security remains the responsibility of law enforcement agencies as the county prepares for the Sunday gathering.

The government has also assured political actors and participants of security during the event, with Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo saying political groups have a right to conduct their activities provided they operate within the law.

For Sifuna, the preparations have provided another opportunity to project the movement’s organisational capacity and grassroots mobilisation.

His late-night messages, coming as advance teams continued working and supporters gathered in Homa Bay, reaffirm the significance attached to Sunday’s tour.

The event is expected to place Sifuna and Linda Mwananchi under close political scrutiny as they seek to turn a growing mobilisation campaign into a broader national movement ahead of the 2027 elections.
