Ruto revisits free diaper promise, says it will be fulfilled by end of first term

President William Ruto has renewed his commitment to providing free diapers to mothers who give birth in public hospitals, saying the pledge will be fulfilled before the end of his first term.

Speaking during a town hall meeting during the Kenya Health Summit 2026, Ruto said his administration would honour the commitments it made to Kenyans during his first term, including ensuring that mothers leave hospitals with diapers for their newborns.

“By the time I complete my first term, I will have discharged all the responsibilities and commitments I made, and make sure that every mother who walks out of hospital will walk out with diapers once they give birth,” Ruto said.

The President’s remarks revive one of the pledges associated with his 2022 campaign promises, particularly his commitment to supporting mothers and improving maternal and child health services.

Ruto said the government remained focused on delivering on the commitments it made to Kenyans and would ensure that the pledges are implemented before the conclusion of his first term.

The free diaper initiative is aimed at easing the financial burden faced by new mothers, particularly those from low-income households, who often have to meet additional expenses immediately after childbirth.

The pledge would also form part of broader government efforts to improve the experience of mothers accessing healthcare and support newborn care.

Ruto has previously outlined measures targeting maternal and child healthcare as part of his administration’s development agenda, with the government seeking to expand access to affordable healthcare services.

His latest commitment comes amid continued public scrutiny of campaign promises made by the Kenya Kwanza administration and calls for the government to demonstrate progress in implementing them.

The President maintained that he would complete the responsibilities and commitments he made to Kenyans within his first term, including the provision of diapers to mothers after delivery.

The pledge, if fully implemented, would provide direct support to new mothers at a critical point when households face increased financial demands following childbirth.
