Argentina defender Cristian Romero has labelled former Manchester United and England defender Gary Neville "stupid" following his criticism of Argentina's central defensive partnership of Romero and Manchester United's Lisandro Martinez ahead of their 2-1 World Cup semi-final victory over England.
Working as a pundit, Neville described Romero and Martinez as "the best, worst centre-half pairing in the world"—remarks that angered Romero, who plays for English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur.
"The only thing I hope is that when I retire, I am not that stupid. Hopefully I won't criticise a player or anyone," Romero told DSports when asked about Neville's comments.
"At the end of the day, we are doing our best for our national team. Sometimes things go well, sometimes they don't, but we are just happy to be in another World Cup final," he added.
Romero and Martinez, both 28, have started all but one of Argentina's matches at this summer's World Cup, helping Lionel Scaloni's side reach a second successive World Cup final.
