Police seizes 3,450 rolls of cannabis in Embu, arrests drug suspect in Machakos

Police have stepped up the fight against illegal drugs after recovering thousands of rolls of suspected cannabis in Embu County and arresting a suspected trafficker in Machakos County during separate intelligence-led operations targeting the narcotics trade.

The National Police Service (NPS) said on Thursday that the two operations were carried out as part of ongoing efforts to break up criminal networks involved in drug trafficking, stop the movement of illegal narcotics and ensure those behind the trade face the law.

In Embu County, a multi-agency security team acted on credible intelligence and raided a house in the Shauri area, where officers recovered 3,450 rolls of suspected cannabis sativa. Detectives also found packaging materials believed to have been used in preparing and distributing the drugs.

Among the items recovered were nine packaging boxes, 200 envelopes and other materials linked to the suspected narcotics operation. Police said all the exhibits have been secured as investigations continue.

The suspect, however, escaped after noticing the officers approaching the premises. Police said efforts to trace and arrest the individual are ongoing.

In a separate operation in Machakos County, officers from Kibaoni Police Patrol Base working together with National Government Administration Officers arrested a suspected drug trafficker.

According to police, the suspect was found with one kilogram of processed cannabis sativa, half a kilogram of unprocessed cannabis, 600 rolling papers and a rolling tray believed to have been intended for preparing and distributing the illegal substance.

The National Police Service said the two operations reflect its continued campaign against organised criminal activities linked to the illegal drug trade.

"These operations underscore the National Police Service's unwavering commitment to pursuing criminals, disrupting illicit enterprises, and denying offenders safe havens," the statement said.

The service added that coordinated investigations remain active, with officers "relentlessly following every lead to ensure that those responsible are brought before the courts."

Police also called on members of the public to continue working with security agencies by sharing information that could help prevent crime and support ongoing investigations.

The service said community cooperation remains "a critical pillar in the fight against crime and the creation of safer, drug-free communities," urging Kenyans to report criminal or suspicious activities through the nearest police station or the available toll-free reporting channels.
