Phil Foden agrees four-year contract extension with Manchester City

Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden has signed a new four-year contract, extending his stay at the club until 2030. The 26-year-old's previous deal was set to expire next summer, but he has committed his future to the Premier League champions under new head coach Enzo Maresca.

Foden was given his first-team debut as a 17-year-old by former boss Pep Guardiola and has since become one of the most decorated players in the club's history. He has made 369 appearances for City, winning an incredible 18 major trophies, including six Premier League titles, one Champions League, three FA Cups, five League Cups, three Community Shields, one UEFA Super Cup, and one FIFA Club World Cup. His finest campaign came in 2023/24, when he scored 27 goals and provided 13 assists, winning the Premier League Player of the Season, FWA Footballer of the Year, and PFA Player of the Year awards.

However, his recent form dipped, and he was left out of Thomas Tuchel's England World Cup squad in May after an inconsistent season where he made only 23 Premier League starts. The decision, which also saw Cole Palmer omitted, came as Tuchel prioritised building a cohesive "team" over selecting the most talented individuals, citing a preference for specialists and team spirit. Foden's attacking output had dropped considerably over the previous two seasons, and he started only 61% of City's matches in 2025/26. Some suggested he was a "victim" of the packed football calendar, which had led to a decline in his availability and performance.

Foden's struggles mirrored a broader downturn at City, but manager Pep Guardiola never lost faith in him. Guardiola had previously backed Foden to become a "one-club man" and urged him to rediscover the joy of playing. He worked with Foden to reignite his passion, reminding him to "never forget who you are" and to focus on the simple pleasure of the game.

Now, with a new contract and a fresh start under Maresca—an assistant during City's Treble-winning 2022/23 season—Foden is eager to turn the page. He says "he can't wait" to work with the Italian again, adding: "Committing my future to City means everything to me... It's not lost on me that I've been lucky enough to be part of a historic period with so many titles won, but we're always looking to the future and trying to win more"
