Nyakera drops Nairobi governor bid, eyes Makadara MP seat

Irungu Nyakera has dropped his bid for the Nairobi gubernatorial seat and shifted his political ambitions to Makadara, where he plans to seek the parliamentary seat in the 2027 General Election on a DCP ticket.

The Nairobi DCP Patron said the decision came after consultations with his political mentors and growing calls from residents of Makadara asking him to return to the constituency and represent them in Parliament.

“After consultations with my political mentors, and more importantly, after listening to the people of Makadara who have asked me to come home and offer myself as their Member of Parliament, I have made the decision to shift my political focus from the Nairobi gubernatorial race to Makadara Constituency,” he said.

Nyakera announced the change after visiting former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua at his Wamunyoro home, where he was accompanied by a delegation from Makadara.

He described Gachagua as his political mentor and thanked him for his guidance and counsel, as well as for welcoming the delegation.

“I am especially grateful for his blessings as I embark on this new journey to become the next Member of Parliament for Makadara Constituency under the DCP Party,” he said.

The former State official also turned his attention to residents of Makadara, signalling the start of his new political push at the constituency level.

“My brothers and sisters of Makadara, I have heard you. I am coming back home!” Nyakera said.

The announcement marks a change from the political plans he had pursued earlier in 2026, when he had positioned himself as a potential candidate in the Nairobi governor's race.

His move to Makadara is set to introduce another name into an increasingly active parliamentary contest as political parties and aspirants prepare for the 2027 election.

The decision also comes amid an internal contest within DCP over its political plans in Nairobi, with James Gakuya having been associated with the party's gubernatorial ambitions.

Nyakera will now focus on securing the DCP nomination and building support in Makadara as he seeks to win the constituency's parliamentary seat.

He brings previous experience in government, having served as Principal Secretary in the State Department of Transport and later as Principal Secretary in the State Department of Planning and Statistics at the National Treasury.

He has also served as chair of the boards of the Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA) and the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC).

With Nyakera moving from the citywide governor's contest to the constituency race, Makadara is expected to see increased political activity as parties and aspirants organise their campaigns and seek to consolidate support ahead of the 2027 General Election.
