The race for the 2027 General Election is already gathering pace, but politicians and their supporters will have to hold off on formal campaigns until the law allows them to begin.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has reminded political parties, candidates and their supporters that electioneering before May 29, 2027, will not be permitted.
IEBC Chairperson Erastus Ethekon said the campaign window will open after the Commission completes the registration of candidates, but the process cannot begin before May 29, 2027.
He warned that activities meant to promote candidates or parties outside the approved period would amount to breaking the law.
The restriction will cover various forms of political mobilisation, including putting up campaign posters and billboards, organising political caravans and engaging in other electioneering activities.
“The law prescribes when election campaigns may commence,” Ethekon said, calling on political parties, candidates and their supporters to follow the electoral laws and regulations.
The IEBC chairperson said the Commission would take appropriate action against individuals or groups found conducting campaigns before the authorised period.
The campaign period is scheduled to run from May 29 to August 7, 2027, with the latter date falling 48 hours before Kenyans cast their ballots on August 10.
The warning comes amid rising political activity across the country as politicians step up rallies and other public engagements ahead of the next General Election.
The Commission has already identified May 29, 2027, as the earliest date for campaigns, with all electioneering required to stop by August 7 before Election Day.
