Narok surveyor arrested over alleged Sh100,000 bribe

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested a surveyor in Narok County over allegations of soliciting and receiving a bribe to facilitate the identification of beacons between two parcels of land.

The suspect, Joan Achieng Odumbe, is alleged to have demanded Sh100,000 from a complainant to facilitate the identification of beacons between two parcels of land in Nairagie Enkare Sub-County, Narok County.

The EACC said preliminary investigations led to an operation that resulted in Odumbe’s arrest at the Narok County offices while she was allegedly receiving Sh50,000.

The Commission said the arrest followed a complaint concerning the alleged demand for the bribe. “Following preliminary investigations, the Commission mounted an operation that led to the arrest of the suspect at the Narok County offices while receiving Kes50,000/-,” EACC said.

Odumbe was subsequently escorted to the Commission’s South Rift Regional Office in Nakuru for processing and recording of her statement.

The anti-corruption agency said investigations into the allegations would continue as the suspect is processed in accordance with the law.

The case highlights the Commission’s continued focus on bribery allegations involving public service delivery points, where citizens interact with government officials and professionals performing public functions.

Land surveying services are critical in establishing boundaries and resolving disputes between property owners, making transparency and accountability in the provision of such services important.

EACC said it remains committed to combating bribery and other forms of corruption in public service delivery. “EACC remains committed to tackling bribery and other forms of corruption at service delivery points and enhancing the quality of public services for all citizens,” the Commission said.

The arrest is part of the Commission’s broader efforts to investigate corruption complaints and take action against individuals suspected of engaging in corrupt practices.

EACC has urged members of the public to report suspected cases of bribery and other forms of corruption to enable authorities to investigate and take appropriate action.

The Commission said sustained enforcement against corruption would help improve accountability and ensure citizens receive public services without being subjected to illicit payments.
