Nairobi residents in dozens of estates and key institutions will face a 26-hour water supply disruption from Friday morning as the Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company carries out emergency repairs on the Sasumua-Kabete pipeline.
The interruption will affect a wide section of the capital, with Nairobi Water listing areas in Westlands, Lavington, Kilimani, Upper Hill, Karen, Kibera, Eastlands, the Central Business District, Industrial Area and other parts of the city.
According to a notice issued on Thursday, September 10, the company will temporarily shut down the Sasumua Water Treatment Plant to allow emergency repair works to be carried out along the pipeline.
"The Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company Ltd wishes to inform the public of a scheduled shutdown of the Sasumua Water Treatment Plant to facilitate emergency repair works along the Sasumua-Kabete pipeline," the notice read.
The shutdown is scheduled to begin at 6:00 a.m. on Friday, September 11, and is expected to end at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 12.
Nairobi Water has advised customers within the affected areas to prepare for the interruption by storing enough water before the shutdown starts.
"Customers are strongly advised to store adequate water in advance and use available supplies sparingly," the notice added.
Among the areas listed for the interruption are Westlands and Lavington, where customers along Riverside Drive, Chalbi Drive, Convent Drive, Gitanga Road, Kunde Road, Hedred, Mbaazi, Masanduku, Leloghi Gardens, Ole Ndume Road, King’ara Road and Riara Road will be affected.
The disruption will also extend to surrounding areas within the two neighbourhoods.
In Kileleshwa, Nairobi Water listed Kandara Road, Gichugu Road, Mazeras Road, Mbooni Road, Othaya Road, Kaputei, Laikipia Road, Githunguri, DoD, St. George’s School and Tembere Road among the locations that will experience the interruption.
Customers around the University of Nairobi main campus, along the Mamlaka Line and Valley Road are also expected to be affected.
Kilimani and Hurlingham are among the other areas that will experience the water cut.
The affected locations include Argwings Kodhek Road from Chaka Road to Hurlingham, Hurlingham Shopping Centre and surrounding areas, Mtito Andei Road, Kindaruma Road, Rose Avenue, Lower George Padmore Road, Daystar University, Denis Pritt Road and Coptic Hospital.
In Upper Hill, the affected areas will include Matumbato, Kiambare and Masaba, Mawenzi Road, parts of Hospital Road, Kenya Road and Elgon Road.
The interruption will also affect Kenyatta National Hospital and KEMRI Flats along Mbagathi Way.
Residents in Dagoretti, Kawangware and Waithaka have also been advised to prepare for the shutdown.
Nairobi Water listed Lower Gitanga Road, parts of Kawangware, Sunset Estate, Sohill City Estates, Kagira, Kagondo, Muhuri Road, Upper Kabiria, Mithonge, Kamwanya, Kahuho Road, Ngina Road, Kikuyu Road and Waithaka among the affected locations.
Other areas in the same section include Ndwaru Road, Upper Waithaka, Gachui, Kirigo, Dagoretti Market and Mariguini.
Uthiru, Mutuini and Gatina will also be affected, with the interruption covering Uthiru Muthua area, Muchugia Road, Mutego, Mutuini and surrounding areas.
Gatina and its environs are also included in the list issued by Nairobi Water.
Jamhuri, Kabarnet and the Kenyatta Market vicinity will also experience the supply interruption.
The affected locations include Bishop Magua, Kabarnet Road, parts of Joseph Kang’ethe Road and Muchai Drive from Ngong Road to Mbaruk Road.
Jamhuri Estate, Upper Hill areas, KNH, KEMRI Offices, Highview 1 and 2, Kenyatta Market and surrounding areas are also listed.
In Kibera, the disruption will affect Makina, Karanja Road, Fort Jesus, Olympic and Kibera Kianda.
Parts of Gatwekera and Ayany will also be affected, alongside Kibera Mwembeni, Makongeni environs, Kwa DC, Lindi, KEMRI Flats along Mbagathi Way and Highrise Estate.
The company also listed Kinoo Road at the Joseph Kang’ethe Junction, Togo Flats and Kang’ethe Greens Upper Flats among the areas that will go without the normal water supply during the shutdown.
In Langata, Nairobi West and Madaraka, the affected locations include Langata Barracks, Sunvalley 1 and 2, Royal Park, Dog Unit, KMA and St. Mary’s and surrounding areas.
Madaraka, Hima Gardens and Siwaka, Funguo Estate, Akila 2 and its environs, Rangers Court, Leeban B and Nairobi West Shopping Centre will also be affected.
Karen and its surrounding areas are also included in the shutdown plan.
The affected locations include Bogani East Road, Muiri Lane, Forest Edge, Mukinduri Road, Muricho Road, Mukoma Road, Kisembe East, Magadi Road, Ndorobo Road, Kikeni Road, Ndovu Road, Kifaru Road, Tandara Road, Mutamaiyo, Mundenderu Road and Kikeni Close.
Other Karen locations listed are Korongo Road, Swara Lodge environs, Quere Lane and Langata South Road.
Nairobi Water further named Mukoyeti West and East, Mukoyeti Road, May East, Dalat, Royale, Kuwinda Road, Kufuga Road, Koitobos, Twiga Hill, Ushirika, Masai West, Hardy and Milima among the affected areas.
The list continues to Simba Hill, Giraffe Centre, Tumbili, Macushla, Bogani Road, Nzohe, Kasuku, Kwarara, Silanga Road, Kumbe Road, Comboni and Mbagathi Ridge.
The Central Business District will also be affected by the shutdown, together with areas along Mombasa Road and South B and South C estates.
Mater Hospital is among the facilities listed in the affected zone.
Other locations that will experience the interruption include Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, SGR, Athi River Export Processing Zone, Coca-Cola, Mukuru and Imara Daima.
Estates and industries along North Airport Road, Embakasi Village, Tassia Estate and MAVWASCo will also be affected.
In the northern parts of the city, the interruption will cover Ngara, Gigiri and several diplomatic areas.
The affected locations include Forest Road, Desai Road, Kipande Road, Limuru Road, Muranga Road, Park Road, Gigiri, Whispers Avenue, Village Market, UNEP and the US Embassy.
Eastlands will also experience the water interruption, with Nairobi Water listing Eastleigh, Maringo, Buruburu Phases 3 and 4, Gikomba, Pumwani, Majengo, Shauri Moyo, Jericho, Jerusalem and Kimathi.
Mathare, Huruma and areas along the Outer Ring corridor are also expected to be affected.
The listed locations include Mathare North, GSU, Rafiki, Utalii College, KPLC Training School, Traffic Headquarters and Mathari Hospital.
Mlango Kubwa, Juja Road, Huruma, Ngei I and II, Kosovo, Racecourse, Ushirika and parts of Ngumba Estate will also experience the disruption.
Other affected locations include Old Muthaiga Road, parts of Thome, Survey, Safari Park Hotel, Kenya Breweries and parts of Baba Dogo light industries.
The entire Industrial Area is also expected to experience the interruption, including Masai Road and adjacent areas.
Nairobi Water said the emergency works are required to help restore and maintain the city's water supply system.
The company asked customers in the affected locations to cooperate while the repair works are being carried out and said efforts would be made to restore supply as soon as possible.
"We appeal to all affected customers for their understanding and cooperation as we undertake these essential emergency repairs. Every effort will be made to restore supply as quickly and safely as possible," the notice concluded.
