Nairobi police arrest two over suspected cannabis valued at Sh420,000

Police in Nairobi have arrested two suspects after intercepting a vehicle carrying suspected cannabis sativa valued at about Sh420,000.

The National Police Service (NPS) officers intercepted the vehicle along Wangari Maathai Road on Sunday, 9 August 2026, during a routine operation.

A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of the suspected cannabis, which police estimated had a street value of Sh420,000.

The two suspects were arrested and taken to Parklands Police Station, where they remained in custody awaiting arraignment.

The suspected cannabis was also taken to the station and preserved as an exhibit as investigations into the incident continue.

The NPS said the interception formed part of its efforts to disrupt the trafficking and distribution of illicit drugs in the country.

“Police officers on duty along Wangari Mathai Road today, August 9, 2026, intercepted a vehicle. Upon a thorough search and inspection, they recovered suspected cannabis sativa with an estimated street value of Sh 420,000. Two suspects were arrested and are currently in custody at Parklands Police Station, awaiting arraignment. The impounded suspected cannabis has also been kept at the station as an exhibit,” the service said.

The operation comes as police continue to target suspected drug-trafficking networks and other forms of organised crime.

The NPS remains committed to enforcing laws against illicit drug trafficking and called for continued cooperation between security agencies and members of the public.

“The National Police Service remains firm in enforcing the law and combating illicit drug-trafficking networks across the country.”

Police also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to the nearest police station or through established emergency channels.

“We thank members of the public for their ongoing cooperation and vigilance, and we encourage them to continue reporting and sharing information about suspicious activities to the nearest police station,” the NPS said.

The suspects are expected to appear in court as police proceed with investigations into the seized substance and the vehicle used to transport it.

The arrest highlights the continued focus by Kenyan security agencies on intercepting suspected narcotics before they reach the market.

Police did not provide further details on the identities of the suspects, the quantity of cannabis recovered or where the vehicle was headed.

The case will now move to the judicial process, where prosecutors are expected to present the evidence recovered during the operation as the investigation continues.
