Mt Kenya East Elders back Ruto-Kindiki ticket, call for unity with Mt Kenya West

Councils of elders from Mt Kenya East have declared their support for Deputy President Kithure Kindiki’s political ambitions, calling for greater unity and solidarity between the eastern and western sides of the Mount Kenya region.

The elders made the declaration in a resolution adopted by the Njuri Ncheke Supreme Council, Nyaangi Ndiriri, Kiama Kia Muembu, Ngome and Mwea Councils of Elders.

They said the people of Mt Kenya East share a common history, cultural values, traditions, geographical ties and economic interests, which require them to remain united and organised.

The elders said Kindiki’s elevation to the position of Deputy President presents an “historic opportunity” for Mt Kenya East to consolidate its unity, dignity and national voice.

They also called on residents of Mt Kenya West to extend to Kindiki the same political solidarity that the eastern region has historically offered leaders from the western side of the mountain.

“For decades, the people of Mt. Kenya East have stood firmly with leaders from Mt. Kenya West,” the resolution states. “We therefore believe that the time has come for the people of Mount Kenya West to reciprocate that solidarity by supporting Kithure Kindiki unconditionally as the Deputy President and in his future ambitions of becoming the first President of the Republic of Kenya from Mount Kenya East.”

The elders cited the region’s past support for former President Jomo Kenyatta, former President Mwai Kibaki, former Vice Presidents Joseph Karanja and George Saitoti, as well as former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

They also said Mt Kenya East had extended “unconditional support and solidarity” to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua during his two years in office.

The councils further resolved to initiate structured engagements with their counterparts in Mt Kenya West, including Kiama Kia Ma, to develop a common position on political, economic, cultural and development matters affecting the wider region.

The proposed engagement will also include discussions on supporting the re-election of President William Ruto and Deputy President Kindiki.

The elders reaffirmed their support for Ruto’s administration and pledged to support his bid for a second term.

They also expressed confidence in Kindiki and declared that anyone seeking to engage Mt Kenya on political and other matters should do so through the Deputy President.

The resolution states that Kindiki is the “duly recognized national leader” through whom the people of Mt Kenya East will engage on matters affecting the political and development future of the region.

Beyond politics, the elders asked the President to prioritise key infrastructure projects in Mt Kenya East.

They specifically called for the construction of a dual carriageway from Makutano through Embu, Chuka, Meru and Maua, as well as the construction of the Nithi Bridge.

According to the elders, the projects would improve connectivity and road safety while easing traffic congestion and facilitating the movement of people and goods.

The councils said their broader objective was to leave future generations with a united, peaceful and prosperous Mt Kenya region.

They pledged to extend a hand of brotherhood to Mt Kenya West and work towards building a united mountain that contributes to Kenya’s peace, stability and development.
