Mombasa Road: KeNHA announces temporary closure at Cabanas

Motorists heading to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) through the Eastern Bypass will have to adjust their route for 35 days after the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) announced a partial closure at Cabanas.

The temporary traffic measure will affect the Eastern Bypass off-ramp on the JKIA-bound side of Mombasa Road (A8), with the works scheduled to start on Thursday, September 17, 2026.

KeNHA said the affected section will remain partially closed until Thursday, October 22, 2026, as construction work is carried out along the road.

According to the authority, the closure is meant to create room for the construction of a box drain at the Cabanas section.

In a public notice, KeNHA Director General Luka Kimeli said motorists travelling to JKIA from the Eastern Bypass will be directed through a designated diversion lane throughout the construction period.

"The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) notifies the public that a section of Mombasa Road (A8) at the Cabanas on the Eastern Bypass Off-Ramp on JKIA-bound, will be temporarily closed partially from Thursday, September 17, 2026, to Thursday, October 22, 2026," KeNHA DG Luka Kimeli said.

Traffic marshals will be stationed at the affected area to guide motorists and help reduce disruption as the works continue.

KeNHA has asked motorists to follow the traffic management plan put in place and cooperate with police officers and traffic marshals operating at the site.

"All Motorists intending to use Mombasa Road (JKIA bound) from Eastern Bypass will usethe provided diversion lane and follow the proposed directions by traffic marshals to ensure minimal traffic disruption in compliance with road safety measures," Kimeli said.

The authority also reminded motorists to observe the directions given at the construction site and adhere to the measures put in place to maintain road safety.

"Motorists are further advised to follow the proposed traffic management plan as well as cooperate with the police and traffic marshals on site. Normal traffic operations on the road will be restored upon completion of the works."

KeNHA said normal traffic flow will return once the construction is completed.

The authority has previously issued notices on similar partial closures along Mombasa Road to allow contractors to undertake box culvert and drainage works.
