Moi Nyeri Complex Primary School finished as the first runners-up at the African Continental Stage of the FIDE ISCF World Schools Team Championship 2026, held at the Coetzenburg Centre in Stellenbosch, South Africa, from July 6 to 11.
The tournament brought together 26 school teams from 22 African countries.
Representing Kenya after qualifying by winning the Kenya National Youth Chess Championship, the Nyeri-based school delivered an outstanding unbeaten campaign, recording five wins and three draws to finish with 13 match points.
Uganda's Sr. Miriam Duggan Primary School claimed the continental title with 14 points, while South Africa's Welgemoed Primary School completed the podium in third place.
The impressive continental performance has earned Moi Nyeri Complex qualification for the 2026 World Schools Team Chess Championship, where they will represent Africa alongside the world's best school teams.
The championship will be held later this year alongside the prestigious FIDE World Rapid and Blitz Championships, giving the young Kenyan players an opportunity to compete on the global stage.
The historic achievement was made possible through the dedication of an exceptional team comprising Patricia Wairimu Waweru, Trevor Kipngetich Waweru, Irwin Ndege Ndegwa, Davidson Mugo Waweru, and Nathaniel Waithaka Itiru, under the guidance of their teacher, Anne Mwangi.
