A three-year opportunity to lead Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital is now open, with the successful candidate set to earn up to Sh560,000 a month.

The mental health facility in Nairobi has invited qualified applicants to apply for the Chief Executive Officer position, which will be offered on a three-year contract and may be renewed based on performance.

The person appointed will take charge of the hospital’s day-to-day administration and strategic direction while putting into effect decisions made by the Board of Directors.

The CEO will be expected to guide the development and execution of the hospital’s strategic and annual work plans. The officer will also oversee preparation of the annual procurement and disposal plan, budgets and financial reports before they are presented to the Board for consideration and approval.

The position will also involve putting in place measures for managing risks, setting performance standards and ensuring the hospital operates within government policies and regulations.

The successful candidate will oversee efforts to deliver Mathari’s vision and mission while putting into action both its immediate and long-term strategies.

The hospital further expects the CEO to lead the development and implementation of policies and procedures, maintain engagement with stakeholders and provide the Board with advice on the institution’s performance and operations.

The officer will also be in charge of the hospital’s financial, physical and human resources.

"Successful candidates are required to develop the hospital's leadership team, promote ethical practices and good governance, strengthen collaboration with different stakeholders and spearhead resource mobilisation," the hospital said.

To qualify, applicants must have a Bachelor's degree in Medicine and Surgery or an equivalent qualification from a recognised university. They must also hold a Master's degree in a health-related field.

Candidates are required to be registered medical practitioners with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council, with a current practising licence and specialist recognition certificate.

The hospital also wants applicants who have undertaken leadership and management courses lasting at least four weeks each from recognised institutions.

A certificate in computer applications is among the other requirements listed in the vacancy notice.

Applicants must meet the leadership and integrity standards provided under Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya.

Mathari said the ideal candidate should have strong leadership and people management abilities, high integrity, sound judgement, good decision-making and analytical skills.

An understanding of public service procedures will also be required, alongside the ability to lead change, solve complex problems and mobilise resources.

The hospital is also seeking a candidate who has a genuine interest in mental healthcare.

The CEO will receive a basic monthly salary of between Sh395,386 and Sh560,000, in addition to applicable allowances and benefits provided under the hospital’s approved terms and conditions of service.

Applicants are required to provide a detailed curriculum vitae, copies of academic and professional certificates, a copy of their National Identity Card or passport and the names and contacts of three referees.

They must also attach clearance certificates from the Kenya Revenue Authority, Higher Education Loans Board, Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission, Directorate of Criminal Investigations and Credit Reference Bureau.

Applications are to be addressed to the Chairperson, Board of Directors, Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital, Nairobi.

Interested candidates can submit their applications physically at the hospital’s Administration Office or email them to [email protected].

All applications must reach the hospital by September 25, 2026, at 5 pm.

"Canvassing in any form will lead to automatic disqualification," the hospital warned.

Mathari said only candidates who make the shortlist will be contacted and added that it is an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity and inclusion.
