Makueni Huduma Centre extends operating hours to boost access to government services

Residents of Makueni County will now be able to access government services for up to 12 hours a day following the extension of operating hours at the county's Huduma Centre.

The new schedule, which took effect on Monday, July 20, allows the Makueni Huduma Centre to operate from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm, replacing the previous 8:00 am to 5:00 pm working hours.

The expansion makes Makueni the 21st Huduma Centre nationwide to implement the extended-hours programme, an initiative by Huduma Kenya aimed at improving access to government services for farmers, traders, workers and other residents whose daytime commitments often make it difficult to visit public offices during regular operating hours.

Huduma Kenya said the programme is designed to provide greater convenience and flexibility, enabling more citizens to access essential government services at times that better fit their personal and professional schedules.

"Makueni Huduma Centre will operate from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm, effective July 20, 2026. This development makes Makueni the 21st Huduma Centre nationwide to adopt extended service hours, a move aimed at enhancing access to essential government services for citizens whose schedules fall outside the ordinary 8:00 am- 5:00 pm window,"  the agency said in a statement.

The agency noted that the decision was informed by the unique economic activities in the county, where many residents depend on agriculture and small businesses for their livelihoods.

According to Huduma Kenya, the extended operating hours are designed to accommodate people who begin work early in the morning or spend most of the day away from government offices.

"The extended hours initiative is tailored to the needs of Makueni's residents, many of whom are engaged in farming, horticulture and small-scale trade. Farmers who begin their day early in the fields can now process government documents before sunrise duties, while traders and horticultural producers who spend long hours at local markets can access services in the evening without disrupting their business." It added.

The programme is expected to provide greater flexibility for residents seeking services such as document processing and other government transactions, while reducing the need to interrupt income-generating activities during the day.

Huduma Kenya noted that the expansion of the initiative reflects the government's continued efforts to make public services more accessible and responsive to citizens' needs.

"Huduma Kenya's extended-hours initiative now covers 21 Centres nationwide, reaffirming the government's commitment to inclusivity, efficiency and citizen-centric public service delivery."

Residents of Makueni and neighbouring areas have been encouraged to take advantage of the new schedule by visiting the Huduma Centre between 7:00am and 7:00pm from Monday to Friday.

The agency said the extended operating hours are intended to ensure that government services remain accessible to more citizens while supporting the daily routines of workers, farmers and business owners across the county.
