Team Kenya has officially begun its journey to the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, with the first group of athletes and officials departing the country on Wednesday.
The final batch is scheduled to leave on Thursday, July 23, as preparations enter the final phase.
The first contingent comprised four para powerlifting athletes, led by Hellen Wawira, alongside three team officials. National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOC-K) First Vice President Barnaba Korir said expectations are high but expressed confidence that Team Kenya is well prepared for the Games.
“The pressure is always there because the expectations are very high. We want to do well at the Commonwealth Games. The competition is very important to us because we are part of the Commonwealth family, and it also provides valuable preparation for future international competitions,” said Korir.
Korir added that the Games will play a crucial role in preparing Kenyan athletes for the 2028 Olympic Games.
Kenya will compete at the multi-sport event, which runs from July 23 to August 3, with the team aiming to build on its previous performances and secure a strong medal haul.
