Inside Sifuna’s Kitui visit after rallies across western Kenya

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has arrived in Kitui County for another political engagement, hours after concluding a series of late-night rallies in Kakamega as he continues to build grassroots support ahead of Kenya’s 2027 General Election.

Sifuna landed at Ithookwe Airstrip on Monday and was received by Kitui Senator Enock Wambua. He was accompanied by digital strategist Pauline Njoroge, although the nature of his scheduled engagement in the county had not been disclosed.

His arrival in Kitui followed a weekend mobilisation tour of western Kenya, where he visited Busia and Kakamega counties alongside members of the Linda Mwananchi movement.

The team has been popularising the movement's Wantam message as Sifuna seeks to strengthen his political profile and position himself as a potential United Opposition presidential flag-bearer in 2027.

Sifuna concluded the western Kenya tour with a late-night rally in Lumakanda, Kakamega County, on Sunday. Despite the rain and darkness, residents turned up in large numbers, with some expressing support for his growing political ambitions.

The rallies also attracted financial contributions and other forms of support towards Sifuna's political activities as he continues his nationwide mobilisation campaign.

His arrival in Kitui also carries political significance because of his meeting with Wambua, who has increasingly appeared alongside the Nairobi senator during his opposition mobilisation activities.

Wambua was among Wiper senators who joined Sifuna during a Linda Mwananchi rally in Machakos. Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has previously acknowledged allowing some members of his party to participate in Sifuna's mobilisation activities.

Other Wiper leaders who have appeared alongside Sifuna include Mavoko MP Patrick Makau and Kitui East MP Joshua Mwalyo.

Kalonzo has also indicated that he would be willing to support Sifuna's presidential ambitions if opposition leaders agree that the Nairobi senator is the most suitable candidate to carry the United Opposition flag in 2027.

The Wiper leader has further said he expects Sifuna and other opposition leaders to support whoever is eventually selected as the coalition's presidential candidate.

The position has fuelled speculation about a possible Sifuna-Kalonzo political alliance as opposition leaders continue to build their respective support bases ahead of negotiations on a possible joint presidential candidate.

Sifuna's continued mobilisation comes as opposition parties seek to consolidate their support ahead of the 2027 election, with several leaders positioning themselves for influential roles in the emerging political realignment.

The Linda Mwananchi movement is expected to continue its nationwide campaign, with the team scheduled to return to Nyanza for a rally in Homa Bay on August 16 before travelling to Meru.

The Meru engagement is expected to be hosted by former Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza.

Sifuna's latest tour highlights the growing focus on grassroots mobilisation as opposition leaders seek to establish their influence ahead of the 2027 contest.

His engagements with leaders from different opposition parties, including Wiper politicians, could also play a role in shaping alliances as the opposition prepares to settle on a joint presidential candidate.
