Gor Mahia step up CECAFA preparations with Rayon Sport friendly

Kenya Premier League (KPL) defending champions Gor Mahia left the country on Thursday for Kigali, Rwanda, where they will face Rwandan giants Rayon Sport in an international friendly on Saturday as part of their preparations for the CECAFA Kagame Cup, scheduled for July 24 to August 7, 2026, in Rwanda.

Gor Mahia's 42-member travelling contingent, comprising 29 players and technical staff, departed in two batches due to limited flight availability. According to team manager Philemon Otieno, the first group left at noon, while the second departed later in the evening.

"We are travelling in two groups today, one leaving in the morning and the next in the evening. After that, we will continue with our preparations in Rwanda for the CECAFA tournament," said Otieno, the club's retired captain.

The 22-time KPL champions have been drawn in Group A alongside hosts APR, Vipers SC of Uganda, and Garde Républicaine of Djibouti.

The friendly against Rayon Sport will provide Ghanaian head coach Charles Akonnor with an opportunity to assess his squad and build team cohesion ahead of the regional tournament.
