Four elected to Nairobi Hospital board as Onyambu holds chair

The Nairobi Hospital has ushered in four new faces on its Board of Management, while Dr Barcley Onyambu retained the top seat as the Kenya Hospital Association (KHA) moved to settle its leadership structure following its latest Annual General Meeting.

Onyambu was returned as chairman during the KHA AGM held on August 25, 2026, while Samson Mbuthia Kinyanjui retained the vice chairmanship, a position he has occupied since December 2024.

The four new members elected during the meeting are Anne Njuguna, Moses Ondaba, Wycliff Wanzala and Lekek Chebii.

Their election brings fresh representation to the 11-member Board, joining Magdalene Muthoka, PhD, Prof John Mwero and Akinyi Gaya Valerie, who secured their positions during the December 2024 elections.

The hospital announced the changes in a notice dated August 28, saying the new leadership structure followed the “successful conduct of the Annual General Meeting of Kenya Hospital Association held on August 25, 2026 at 2:00 pm.”

KHA, a non-profit organisation that owns The Nairobi Hospital, said the Board had been formed in line with provisions contained in its Articles of Association.

The notice cited Articles 38(a), (b) and (e), 40, 42, 43, 46, 47 and 51 as the provisions under which the Board was constituted.

The latest changes come at a time when the hospital and its parent association have faced a prolonged governance dispute that has spilled into Parliament and the courts.

In March, the Senate considered concerns linked to an “ongoing dispute affecting the Nairobi Hospital and its parent body, the Kenya Hospital Association”.

Among the matters raised were questions over Board elections, the legitimacy of some officeholders, the powers held by trustees and decisions involving the institution’s finances.

The changes announced after the August AGM, however, do not affect the hospital’s medical advisory leadership.

Dr Agnes Gachoki remains chairperson of the Medical Advisory Committee, a position she secured in August 2025.

Dr Edwin Rono also remains the committee’s vice chairman after taking up the position in March 2026.

The new Board therefore retains its top two officeholders while adding four elected members to the leadership team, marking the latest change in the management of the hospital and the association that owns it.
