A fire has broken out at Mombasa Maize Millers in Majengo, Mombasa County, prompting a multi-agency response to contain the blaze.

The Kenya Red Cross said firefighting efforts were ongoing on Monday, with the Mombasa Fire Department, Kenya Ports Authority, Kenya Red Cross and County Government health ambulances deployed to the scene.

“Efforts to contain the fire at Mombasa Maize Millers, Majengo, are ongoing. A multi-agency team; Mombasa Fire Department, Kenya Red Cross, Kenya Ports Authority, and County Government Health Ambulances, is on the ground,” the organisation said.

Mombasa Cement and the Jeffrey Foundation are also supporting the operation by continuously supplying water to fire trucks.

The Kenya Red Cross did not immediately provide details on what caused the fire, the extent of damage to the maize milling facility or whether there were any casualties.

The organisation's first alert said the fire had broken out at the Mombasa Maize Millers facility in Majengo, prompting the immediate deployment of first responders.

“A fire has broken out at Mombasa Maize Millers in Majengo, Mombasa County. County Fire Brigade and Kenya Red Cross first responders are at the scene responding,” the Kenya Red Cross said in its initial update.

The incident has brought together emergency and public agencies as well as private organisations to support the firefighting operation.

The presence of county health ambulances at the scene provides emergency medical support as responders continue their efforts, while the Kenya Ports Authority is also participating in the multi-agency operation.

The additional water supply from Mombasa Cement and the Jeffrey Foundation is aimed at helping fire crews maintain firefighting operations.

The Kenya Red Cross said it would provide further information as the situation develops.

The fire comes as emergency responders continue working to prevent the blaze from spreading and bring it under control.
