Fifa president Infantino to stand for re-election

FIFA President Gianni Infantino will seek re-election in 2027, with football’s world governing body reaffirming his intention to remain in office.

Infantino, who has served as FIFA president since 2016, announced in April that he would contest the election.

“The Fifa president announced in April that he will stand for re-election in 2027,” FIFA said in a statement.

“Of course, nothing has changed. Mr Infantino will be standing for re-election.”

The 56-year-old Swiss has faced mounting pressure following his now-scrapped plan to sell stakes in FIFA competitions to private investment firms.

The proposal triggered a global backlash, with UEFA threatening to boycott FIFA competitions, including the World Cup.

Several European football associations, including England, Scotland, Wales and the Republic of Ireland, have since withdrawn their support for Infantino.

FIFA rules allow a president to serve a maximum of four terms. If re-elected, Infantino would remain in office until 2031.

UEFA is reportedly confident of finding a candidate to challenge him, although no challenger has officially been named. CONCACAF president Victor Montagliani is considered one possible option.

A candidate must secure the backing of at least 106 of FIFA’s 211 member associations, with nominations due by November 18.
