Egypt demands FIFA probe into officials after Argentina loss

Following their dramatic and controversial 3-2 Round of 16 defeat to Argentina in Atlanta on Tuesday, the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) has called on FIFA to remove the match officials from the tournament.

According to reports on Wednesday, the EFA confirmed it had lodged a formal complaint with football's world governing body, demanding an investigation into what it described as "double standards" in officiating during Tuesday's match.

"Hany Abou Rida, president of the Egyptian Football Association, filed a complaint with FIFA demanding an investigation into referee François Letexier of France after the serious refereeing mistakes committed by the officiating team and the double standards that caused the Egypt team to lose the match and exit the World Cup," an EFA statement read.

With Egypt leading 1-0 in the second half, the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) ruled out a goal by Mostafa Zico after midfielder Marwan Attia was penalised for stepping on Lisandro Martínez's foot in the build-up.

However, moments later, Egypt felt Mohamed Salah was fouled inside the Argentina penalty area in a similar incident, but no review was conducted before the reigning champions broke away to score the stoppage-time winner and secure a 3-2 victory.

The EFA is now calling for an investigation into both the on-field referees and the VAR team over what it described as "blatant errors" and a refusal to review key incidents.

The federation also demanded "the exclusion of the referee and the entire officiating crew from the World Cup after investigating these mistakes" and alleged "discrimination against the Egyptian national team."

Egypt's elimination extends its long wait for a first-ever World Cup quarter-final appearance, with another painful exit ending a campaign that came agonisingly close to making history.
